Silverdale: An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The historic village of Silverdale (and its charming neighbour Arnside) sits snugly on the northern shore of Morecambe Bay in a spot that’s been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, thanks to its rich diversity of habitats and wildlife. The cottage is located centrally within the AONB giving doorstep access to the whole area. Its deciduous woodlands, limestone grasslands and coastal salt marshes are enclosed by low limestone hills creating a perfect environment for rare butterflies and marshland birds. You can discover the rich birdlife on a visit to RSPB Leighton Moss in Silverdale.

Sunnyside Cottage is ideally located – just 300 yards from the coast and a similar distance from Eaves Wood and its many footpaths – don’t miss the great views from the Jubilee monument known locally as ‘The Pepperpot’.

One of our favourite walks is along the coastal path (or the sands at low-tide) to the quaint seaside village of Arnside – a tempting spot with a pretty Victorian parade of shops along the promenade. Enjoy a pint at The Albion then head back over Arnside Knott, taking in the stunning views of the Lakeland fells across the bay.

Only 13 miles south of Kendal, the walks and attractions of the Lake District are but a short drive away. Ingleton is 15 miles giving access to the Yorkshire Dales, and it’s just 8 miles to Hornby – gateway to the Forest of Bowland AONB. These areas provide a great variety of walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits with numerous villages, gardens and stately homes all within a 45 minute drive.

Facilities locally are excellent – the nearest shop and pub are both about 600 yards from the cottage, whilst there is a modern co-op, post office, newsagent, butcher and chemist in the village. Great food is available at the Silverdale Hotel and The Royal pub, and there is a small Indian restaurant and takeaway, Cinnamon Spice. There are many pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area, within a few minutes’ drive.

There is public access at the nearby Holgates leisure complex with gym, sauna and indoor swimming pool; several stables nearby for trekking and horse riding, fly fishing for trout at Yealand, (and various other local lakes), public launch for sailing and windsurfing on Windermere at Fell Foot 20 miles away, whilst sailing boats, motor boats and canoes can be hired at various locations on the lake.

Visitors are made welcome (and fees very reasonable) at Silverdale golf club, just 1/2 mile away, which must be one of the most picturesque courses in the country. There is good cycling in the area, both off off-road as well as cycleways, whilst Trowbarrow reserve a short distance away offers safe off-road fun for youngsters. Cycle hire is available locally. The old quarry at Trowbarrow is also renowned for its climbing, with 139 named and graded routes!

Within just a few miles is the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, with monkeys, leopards, butterflies and bats whilst nearby Leighton Hall has interesting gardens and the renowned falconry displays. Levens Hall is an Elizabethan manor, approx 5 miles away, with outstanding topiary and gardens. Holker Hall near Grange – gardens and hall open to public.
